Next Time...I Promise

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

While exploring the local areas of Barbados, I decided to leave my flash for my camera at the resort one night and make use of just the available light. This image was shot using one of my low-light prime lenses. Check out all of those different color temperatures (sounding like a camera geek - I know right).

Anyways, the location of this shot was at a fish market called Oystons. Some of my Bajun readers will definitely correct me on that spelling. The food was great! I had red snapper - my personal favorite (Hmmm...think I'll have that tonight for dinner).

I plan on going back to shoot in 2008 and 2009. There were so many more amazing images that I wish I could have captured....and I will. One night while riding in a taxi, we drove past a building that was really dark but had turquoise doors. The gentlemen inside were playing cards and the doors were illuminated by dim lights on the porch. I almost paid the driver just to go back so that I could get a time exposure. Anyways, after looking through my images from earlier in the day, I realized that I did take a picture of the building while on the way to the pier. Here is the shot:

I'll get that night shot I want next time. And that's a promise!

Coming Soon - Honoring George A. Lottier 1944 - 2007

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

I am currently in Miami photographing a business conference. It has been a rewarding experience to interact with some of my old associates from the corporate world. Next week, I'll take on Orlando and New York for a few shoots.

I recently had the honor of shooting a golf tournament at the East Lake Golf Country Club in Atlanta. This annual tournament supports the interaction and growth of business relationships between small, female and minority-owned businesses.

This year's tournament was in honor of George A. Lottier, former president of the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council (GMSDC). I considered George to be one of my business mentors as I had several conversations with him before going full-time with photography.

Stay tuned for more pictures from the tournament and my personal tribute to George.

Hope...Do You Believe In Your Future?

I've been on this unfocused future kick for a while but I feel that there is more to say.

Even when you feel your situation is difficult. Even when you feel that hope is gone. Even when you feel that you have been forsaken. Even when you feel that your joy just won't come.

Look for a clear path to those that will support you. The people that have been put in your path (life) to help/make you learn and to help/make you be strong. Its not all rose petals all the time but sometimes our problems are just to make us grow. Sure, we've all heard these messages before. But instead of just hearing, try internalizing the message and putting it to good use. Do you believe everything positive that you actually say or think? Or when times get rough do you kick all of your faith out the window?

As I lay on the ground taking this image from the back of a wedding (and I'm allergic to grass - can you believe that??) I shot this picture almost five times before I got the effect I wanted. What if I had stopped after taking image #1? Would I have missed it?

Sometimes we as humans stop short of our success and what we can truly achieve. We let a bad experience or someones words hold us just shy of our true potential. I just want to encourage you to continue surrounding yourself with positivity and looking for a brighter and clearer future that is sure to come. My days are not always that clear either, but when you look closely - as this picture would suggest - you can see the beauty of your struggles and rejoice for the miraculous person you will become after overcoming all of your hardships.

By the way, thank goodness I did not break out in hives after taking this picture in the grass. I promise to go to an allergist soon.

Be encouraged!

Laugh, Cry, Sing, Pray, Dance, Reflect....a shoot from the KNIGHT Files

Do all these words/actions go together??? Of course they do. And not just in your car on the way to work or a Wednesday night midweek service!

Before Nakia came down to Atlanta for her photo shoot last week I told her to make sure that she came with an open mind. So she left North Carolina at 3 AM on Friday with her best friend in tow to meet up with this little known photographer guy in Atlanta. We had a pre-shoot meeting so I could get a better feel for exactly how this shoot would go and where we would shoot. She told me that laughing wasn't necessarily her thing and she doesn't have any good photos of herself (typical client response). Her best friend gazed at me with a bit of reservation like she was ready to give me the 3rd degree at any given moment.

I had to think quickly. Hmmmmm. How was I to reach these two and get them to open up a bit?

Armed with my iPhone, a reflector, one lens, and a step stool (that's a first) - I was ready to let 'em have it.

After a quick tour of historic Midtown - history lessons always help - I started the shoot. To her surprise I shoved my iPhone in her pocket, jumped on top of a five foot wall, and started badgering her with questions as if she was in a court room (which both the ladies have a bit of career experience controlling - to say the least).

Within an hour I had Nakia laughing, crying, singing, praying, dancing, and reflecting. We had a ball. Then I decided to get the two friends together for a sentimental moment turned hilarious. Check out the photos for a peek at the fun!

KNIGHT goes to Africa!

Thursday, October 11, 2007

I have been hard at work in my spare time researching and writing the proposal for my book and upcoming international wedding documentary trips. The book is entitled WEDDINGS AROUND THE WORLD, A Pictorial View by Ross Oscar Knight (© 2007 Ross Oscar Knight).

The book will focus on wedding traditions and customs throughout the world. The first stop will be Africa (remember KNIGHT goes to Africa from earlier this year?). I am really looking forward to documenting several weddings in West and South Africa in 2008! My camera equipment and photojournalism skills will be up for a sure test. It is a blessing that I have been contacted by several individuals wishing to help fund my exploration into Global Weddings.

I am asking that you submit questions you have about weddings in other countries.

Example:

Do most weddings in other countries occur in a religious building?
Ross Knight - Atlanta, GA

What role does the government play in the institution of marriage/weddings in other countries?
Ross Knight - Atlanta, GA

Are rings or some form of symbol of commitment exchanged between individuals during a wedding?
Ross Knight - Atlanta, GA

Let me be honest, I have already come up with about 250 questions but I am interested in hearing what you may want to know also. As long as it is not a question I already have, I will retain your name and question and include you in my list.

If you do not want your question posted to this blog, simply email the the question, your name, and city/state to info@rossoscarknight.com. To simply post your question to this blog, click the "COMMENTS" tag below.

Thanks a million and one!

Eric & Nadja - Barbados Wedding - Part 4

Tuesday, October 9, 2007

When it gets dark in Barbados, it gets really dark. I snuck away from the reception to shoot a timed exposure of the tent and villa. After running into two palm trees and twisting my ankle I almost fell into the pool! As if that wasn't enough, I returned to the party and enticed the couple to follow me back out into the darkness for the final shot (the last image in this post).

Too much fun for one day...I don't think so. Eric and Nadja, thanks for allowing me to share my passion and my gift with you.

Enjoy!

Eric & Nadja - Barbados Wedding - Part 3

Next I decided to shoot from a distance. The sun was just right at 4 PM to create great back lighting.

The most amazing shot (image #7 below) to me was after Eric and Nadja exchanged vows and rings a beam of light remarkably cast through the clouds right between the couple. I adjusted my camera hardware in the nick of time to snap that shot! My favorite by far. It was as if.... well let's just say it was very extraordinary.

Eric & Nadja - Barbados Wedding - Part 2

Eric and Nadja had a wonderful ceremony with 40 friends and family at the Belair House on the the coast of St. Philip. The wedding definitely represented both their personalities and interests. Check out the Butterfly theme! Eric was mighty stylish and looked like he belonged in a GQ ad while Nadja's beauty captivated us all as the sun glistened her effortless smile. I started the day by capturing all the cool details. Part 3 coming up next.

Congratulations to Eric and Nadja!
