Terry + Bernadette | Las Vegas, NV - Sepia Love

Friday, April 25, 2008

Since many of my clients become true friends of mine, celebrating their weddings and other special moments in their lives become personal to me. Terry and Bernadette are a true example of this. I met Terry back in 2003 when I moved 40 minutes south of Atlanta to save money to purchase my fist home (2004). Terry was a friend of a friend and we were introduced briefly not really knowing that our paths would cross again and again. Fast forward to 2006 when Terry contacted me about a wonderful young lady that he met in Las Vegas and had been dating for some time. He wanted me to document his proposal to her at The Chateau Elan Winery. That's when I met Bernadette. Since then, we have become great friends and get to hang out when we're in the same city.

Today both of them were feeling the stress of the wedding. Check out the first picture below. Friends and family were still arriving in town, suits being delivered, dress to be picked up, and there are events planned every night up until the wedding. So I decided to get them away from their cell phones and out to take a few pictures. Luckily, the beautiful Lake Las Vegas Resort complimented this equally beautiful couple perfectly.

We were shooting during mid-day so the challenge was the harsh light outdoors. I worked creatively to capture the couple's personality and use compositions that matched their style. Oh yeah, that checkers game was not a set up. It was real! Check how serious Terry was thinking about his next move.

Terry - ever the dapper gentleman

Bernadette - with her gorgeous smile

Teka-Ann,

You always pick up on the slightest details and I can appreciate that. I was really working hard to get the checker board in the shot. You should see that image full-size!

Heard you met Mrs. KNIGHT at the conference on the West Coast. That's great!

Be blessed.

Stellar work Mr. Knight!! I went to highschool with Terry (shout out A.H. Parker High) and I'm very happy to see him successful with life and love! Have yourself some fun in that desert heat....

Ross, you are a master at the depth of field. Those last two pics with the close up of the tiny flowers and leaves in focus and just the right softness to the couple in the background is wonderful.

Thanks Deitra, those last two shots are my favorites. I'm already thinking about doing a large format print of one of them. Take care and blog you later.

Bruh, the things that you are able to do with a shutter, lens and natural light are both amazing and unfair at the same time. Kill 'em, Ross, kill 'em! I would have never thought to compose some of the shots that you do - photojournalism at its best! Now, I need to go and propose to my wife all over again just to get you to shoot our engagement session and wedding! I wonder if she'd say yes.......hmmmm! Peace brother! Be blessed and hope the shoot goes phenomenally well tomorrow! Peace!

Troy, I'm sure she'd say yes! Talk to you when I come to D.C. next. Thanks for your comments - this couple is really special.

Hey Ross as always I love your work. Love the way the sepia just simplifies the story you have to tell and keeps my eyes focused on the couple. They are a gorgeous couple! They look like they are having fun and I am sure they will remember how fun it was to do the shoot every time they see the photos.

Like Troy said you've got major skills and the way you tell stories is amazing. Great work. Love the fourth shot the light and shadow work perfectly to tell the story of a couple relaxed spending time with each other. Really like the way you framed all the shots.

Nice work with the shot of the game and his drink in his shades.

My favorite is the one with her smiling at you as he observes her in the background.

At the risk of repeating myself, bravo!

Great job as always. I love the way that you're able to capture the spontaneity and feeling of the moment. It is truly a gift. My photos don't even come close. It's not the camera is the user. I love the shots. So help me out...I'm looking at picture 4 and 8. picture 4 shows the feet and picture 8 seems to be the same shot just wider. Is that editing? Or changes to the flash. How did you get picture 4 to be so shadowed and dark but not on picture 8? By the way, I've settled on the D30...now I need to pick your brain about new lenses. ;) Can't wait for the wedding pics...

Hi Prudi pru, It was 12 noon during this shoot so I didn't bring a flash with me. I'll explain these shots in detail at the workshop. Picture 4 and 8 are two different shots if you look at the position of the cocktails and the palm tree.

Way to go with the camera! See you soon.
