KNIGHT Gallery Welcomes our First Artist - Lesley Ann Price (6.23 - 8.25)

Thursday, June 14, 2012

Earlier this year I gave a presentation for the Women In Focus Group. After the talk I met Lesley and felt that I was in the presence of a kindred spirit. We've kept in touch and talked for months about a future collaboration. She will now be our first showcased artist at the KNIGHT Gallery (659 Auburn Ave, Studio G3). Read below to view her artist statement and mark your calendars for the Friends and Family Event (June 23, 2012  6PM to 9PM) and Opening Reception (June 30, 2012  1PM to 8 PM).

“the other south”
South Africa is a multicultural, multilingual country of great contrasts. Hidden within its many cultures, diversities, oral histories and unique landscapes lie a photographers dream.
Caring profoundly for the country where I was born, I choose to document specific aspects of life in South Africa that holds meaning for me. This may include individuals, community or political issues. Aspects of time and presence seem to be a common thread inherent in my work.
I became both a photographer and an encaustic artist about ten years ago. My visits to my home country, as I observe the progress and pain in this place of great flux and rebirth, seems always to renew my sole.
I include script and indexical markings amongst the visual images, usually poetry, texts and authentic stamp markings which belong to the narrative I am attempting to portray.
The photographs are produced in my own darkroom and are Silver Gelatin Prints.

Marital Bliss at Villa Christina Dunwoody by Ross Oscar Knight

Napoleon and Michelle @ Villa Christina - ATL

I used my fingers this morning to make a calculation. I've known Napoleon for 15 years. We've attended two colleges together (Morehouse and Georgia Tech) and we're frat brothers. I photographed his amazing proposal to Michelle at Urban Grind Coffee and the W Hotel. He also attended one of my photography workshops. Obviously we were meant to meet for a reason.

As I photographed he and Michelle after the ceremony they radiated in each others presence. The wedding festivities were equally hilarious and emotional as friends and family poured their hearts out in honor of the couple. Marital Bliss!

A Magical Indian Concept Shoot at Foxhall Resort and Sporting Club by Ross Oscar Knight

Ross Oscar Knight and KIS (cubed) Behind The Scenes Footage from Ryan Rodinis on Vimeo.
(KNIGHT footage ends at time marker 3:07)

Its been a year plus 2 months and now you can finally see the rest of the story! Maybe then you can tell me why I decided to wear all black at a shoot on what must have been the hottest day of my life?? Sunburn + Dehydration. We held these images until they were recently published in the Maharani Magazine Inaugural Issue out this Summer. The beautiful 8 page spread can be viewed (page 46 - 53) by clicking here. Editor and Blogger, Shawna Gohel, had more to say about the shoot 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Excerpt from April 2011: "Yesterday I braved the fog, heat, rain, horses, frogs, birds, spiders, mosquitoes, flies, and even a polo player for a 13 hr fashion shoot at the Foxhall Resort & Sporting Club. We started at 6 AM and called it quits with a champagne toast at 7 PM. With rain boots handy to walk through the marsh and tip toe down the bank of a lake, I lost 5 lbs and had to be driven home at the end of the day. The result? A beautiful collection of images for your viewing enjoyment!"

For a complete list of all the amazing vendors that helped Nirjary and I to put this fab shoot together view the credits at the end of the post.

Previous 2011 posts on this shoot are: April and December

Ross Oscar Knight Photographs President Barack Obama in New York

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

Yesterday I had the esteemed privilege to photograph President Barack Obama's arrival to New York on Air Force One and his departure on Marine One. I put my camera down only once to shake his hand. It was an honor to meet the President in person and intriguing to watch his security detail in action.
