The Moment I Gasped in London by Ross Oscar Knight

Friday, August 31, 2012

While I was in London last week I had a moment when my index finger froze on top of my shutter. I gasped. Here is the story.

A day before the wedding in Marylebone I traveled around the city to select locations for the couple's portraits. There was rain but I figured we might steal a few pictures in the park despite the humidity forecasted. Fast forward to an hour before the ceremony as I documented preparations at the hotel, the rain began again. My subconscious did the normal play of options on how I would light my subjects. I'd rather not use artificial lighting during a ceremony opting to conceal my whereabouts instead. However, at this point the sun was completely out of the picture. Once I arrived at the church the clouds converged even more, so I resorted to turning on my flash. I entered the sanctuary and quickly took a low crouching position close to where I knew the bride would eventually reside.

Remarkably as the doors opened and the audience rose, a beam of light simultaneously shone through the door frame and the windows. It was breathtaking. I was tempted to move for an even better view but I knelt patiently for the right moment. I waited to retrieve a different camera after the bride took a seat. That's when I noticed the beam of light magically illuminated the brides veil. It appeared as if everyone's face in the church went dark with the exception of the bride's. Just as I was contemplating the composition the bride turned and looked at her father. The exchange was priceless. I smiled too and gasped. My finger was frozen atop my shutter. I first observed this father/daughter bond a day before at the parents' home. I knew there would be a perfect time to highlight their relationship.

In all of my photography I am increasingly interested in exploring the relationships, customs, and traditions that exist in different cultures. Furthermore, I strive to capture the exchange of emotions between my subjects. In the last photo of this series, the tenderness shown by the bride as she approached the groom describes better than my words what drives me to frame stories with my lens.

KNIGHT Intern - Sakeenah Fills in for Location Research

Thursday, August 16, 2012

This week I took time with our Summer intern, Sakeenah, to take her on a location research trip. Our goal was to prepare for a shoot this Saturday. She got a behind the scenes look at how I find great light and how I interact with professionals in the industry. Sakeenah has been instrumental in the preparation for our upcoming fine art shows, my book release, editing, and design. What I appreciate most about Sakeenah is her ability to listen (to my ramblings) and that she is not too prideful to get her hands dirty. Check her out cleaning the window below to hang in the studio. Thanks Sakeenah for all of your hard work!

KNIGHT Fine Art Haiti Exhibit Travels to Tennessee: September 3 - November 3, 2012

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

I traveled to Haiti in 2010 after the magnitude 7 earthquake to assist in the relief efforts by volunteering to help build an orphanage. Instead of focusing on the destruction, I headed north, where many orphaned children relocated. My goal - to uncover the beauty of Haiti, its children, its future. I found my subjects in Bonneu, St. Luis du Nord, and the Island of Tortuga. The images in this series tell a story of the life and culture of Haiti beyond the stained image of destruction. The disaster only illustrates a small piece of Haiti’s story, while my images offer a different perspective into the culture and spirit of its people. I have provided short stories to indulge the viewer and put them in the moments leading up to or after the photo.

Preparation for Precious Cargo

Monday, August 6, 2012

When I put our baby bed together it felt like the first time I had ever used a screwdriver. I was alone in the house and my hands were shaking. Obviously I was nervous. I broke out into a sweat a few times. I opted not to use a drill because I wanted to feel the security of each piece of wood as it connected the frame that will hold our baby. I normally find excitement in tossing instructions for appliances opting to experiment instead. Not with this bed. I even succumbed to watching the online video about features and common mistakes. At the end of the assembly, I used a towel around the screwdriver to torque every screw and then I double checked every connection. What more can I say, precious cargo is on the way.
