Carter Turns One - The Couple Celebrates Five

Thursday, January 31, 2013

Am I still photographing people in the U.S. or just blindly traveling around the world? I will have to admit that with the birth of Addison and my fine art/philanthropic push, I have been a little absent. I've been shooting, just not posting on anything other than the blue eyes I see staring back at me in the morning. Major priority shift! Last night I figured that I should get back on track and pull from my recent assignments.

Chris and Valerie will celebrate five years of marriage this year! Their 2008 New York wedding is one that all of my future brides seem to recall. I was honored when Valerie reached out to me asking if I would photograph their family in Maryland. Carter, the newest addition to the fold, was turning one and she wanted me to capture some special moments of the three of them together. I think ever since having my daughter I have become more sensitive to how I photograph kids and their relationship to their parents. We spent time indoors with Carter's toys and then ventured outside to see how he would the grass. He was all smiles and the parents were too. I'm looking forward to watching this family grow and documenting them for a lifetime!

Tip for beginner photogs: Kids can get testy if you are shooting too long. Its best to find out from their parents what the child's normal routine is. You can then fit your shooting time to when they are most active. Also, keep in mind that children may have allergies to grass or sensitive skin. Get your equipment set up early so that you'll be prepared for the moment.

KNIGHT Partners with Community2Community

Friday, January 4, 2013

As we make our way to Macon, GA for the opening of our “Beauty in the Face of Destruction” exhibit, we’d like to announce our philanthropic partnership with Community2Community (C2C). With this exhibit our intention is to bring awareness to the continued efforts of non-profits dedicated to the rebuilding of Haiti. We’ve identified Community2Community as one of these organizations and as a result, we will donate 10% of our exhibition proceeds to them.

Community2Community’s mission is “To serve as an umbrella organization working and collaborating with individuals, agencies and other organizations to facilitate broad-based initiatives that mobilize intellectual, financial, and material resources to recovering international communities in a sustained effort to support their transformation into healthier, sustainable, self-sufficient communities.”

Marie-Yolaine Eusebe, a Haitian-American, resigned from her position at American Express after the devastating earthquake hit in 2010 to found C2C. She selected her father’s hometown, Petite Goâve, as the first place to map out and begin rebuilding efforts. C2C is currently in the process of implementing the Haïti Restoration and Transformation Pilot Project in Piton Vallue, a small village in Petite Goâve. Phase 1 is complete, and they are on target to continue with the next phase of work.

We invite you to visit our exhibit at the 567 Center for Renewal Art Gallery in Macon, GA (January 4th – 25th) and to learn more about Community2Community. We are truly thrilled about this partnership and hope we can make a valuable financial contribution to them as they work to rebuild a nation!

Here's a preview image from KNIGHT Magazine outlining Community2Community's structure:

KNIGHT Opening Exhibit - January 4th - 567 Gallery

Thursday, January 3, 2013

January's First Friday brings the opening reception of "Beauty in the Face of Destruction", a photography exhibit by Atlanta-based photographer Ross Oscar Knight. It has been over two years since the big earthquake that destroyed Haiti, but rebuilding efforts still continue. Knight, who spent time in Haiti helping with the rebuilding efforts, tells the story of the children, who he sees as the future and hope of Haiti, through this exhibit. He provides short stories alongside the photos to give insight into what he experienced and the children he met while in Haiti. A portion of the proceeds from this exhibit will be donated to Community2Community, a non-profit organization dedicated to the rebuilding of Haiti. You can learn more about C2C at: www.community2community.info

The exhibit will be on display at The 567 Jan. 4-25. Come to the opening reception on First Friday (Jan. 4), 6-9 pm, to see this fascinating exhibit, meet the photographer, and enjoy light refreshments. On Jan. 17 at 6 pm, Ross Oscar Knight will give a gallery talk at The 567 discussing this exhibit for those who are interested in learning more.
