May 2013 Photography Workshop Recap!

Friday, July 26, 2013

When I first started teaching 5 years ago, I had a vision and a prayer. I wanted to touch the lives of people by sharing my dreams and experiences. That's how the experience KNIGHT workshop was born. 10 brave souls walked into the event space of a dessert shop to listen to what I had to say. I was nervous but sure of what I wanted to achieve - Build Community Through Photography. I've since fine tuned the message and enjoyed every individual who has blessed me with their patience to learn. I do not take the investment into my dream lightly. I know that God has placed a message on my heart and the right people in place to keep me motivated. Thank you all! The May 2013 workshop totals 170 individuals that have participated in one of our workshops since 2008. Wow! Time sure does fly.

Our summer workshop (pictured below) had attendees from Aruba, London, Connecticut, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. We spent time sharing stories during class and at lunch. Then we walked a portion of the Atlanta Beltline (a comprehensive Atlanta revitalization effort) and Historic Inman Park (Atlanta's first planned community). From the photos, you will see how engaged the participants were. I saw their growth right before my eyes!

We have some special announcements coming soon that will allow an unlimited amount of photographers and enthusiasts to join us later this year for a Building Community Through Photography initiative. Stay tuned!

Ben and Kisha @ Beaches - Turks & Caicos

Every once in a while I meet someone that I feel like I've known before. They are a familiar spirit - like we've been friends for years. That's how I felt when I met Ben and Kisha in person. I flew up to New York to photograph their engagement session and as soon as we started talking I was put at ease.

They decided to have a destination wedding in Turks & Caicos at the Beaches Resort. Except for the detailed timeline, informative tips, and generous welcome bag, you'd have no idea that Kisha and Ben were the bride and groom. They were so laid back! My kind of people. Since I was surrounded by their family and close friends on the island, I spent time investigating facts about the couple. I started with Kisha's dad and worked my way through the friends to Ben's son. Story after story, I learned more about Ben and Kisha's character. I fell in love with them and their relationship. One of my quotes is, "the key is to love what you see and to shoot what you feel." By the time the wedding started I felt as if I was capturing the moments of members of my own family.

As a wedding gift, Ben gave Kisha a private photography workshop with me! So we'll be hanging out a lot more soon. I couldn't be happier to welcome this family into my life with open arms!

Barefoot Princess at the Beach by Ross Oscar Knight

Saturday, July 20, 2013

A little sun never hurt anybody. This is Addison's first time at the beach. It was exciting to see her experience the ocean and sand with such curiosity. She wore Mommy's hat at one point to shield herself from the sun.

Derrick and Elnaz @ Candler Park Golf Course

You never know who you might meet on Facebook. Elnaz contacted me from Belgium several months ago and we started talking about her upcoming wedding in Germany. She and Derrick flew to Atlanta so that we could meet and talk about their plans and...here we are today. Only one week from their big day. For the engagement session I had an idea to have them make a bouquet from their favorite flowers!

Feel Their Spirit and Know What Love Is by Ross Oscar Knight

Joe and Tara @ Decatur Square

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. Love does not delight in eveil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.   1 Corinthians 13:4-7

I'm beginning to believe that I have some sort of mojo or something. If you come to work for me, within a year you'll either be engaged or well on your way to a serious relationship. That's whats happened to my last 3 studio managers and 2 photographers. I can't make any promises to anyone, I'm just stating the facts. Maybe its because they are around wedding images all day long and then catch the bug?

Just over a year ago, Tara took a leap of faith and traveled from Brooklyn to Atlanta to come and work with me. She has whipped the studio into shape and photographed clients with me from here to Africa. We've talked about and shared our dreams both business and personal. One day Tara came to the studio and there was a noticeable difference in her demeanor. She was glowing like a light! It didn't take long for her to spill the beans about meeting Joe.

The first time I met Joe I was a little skeptical. He was quiet and I felt protective of the woman that I view as a little sister. Who is this guy and what type of sweet talking is he doing to make this girl blush at the mention of his name? I learned more about his background and then I realized the common denominator he had with Tara. Their love of God. Its quite obvious when they are together the spiritual connection they share. They serve as youth leaders at their church! One of the sweetest things I witnessed from the two of them was one day after work. Joe came to pick up Tara who knew that my father had just had a stroke. They asked to pray for my family and we made a circle in the middle of the studio to touch and agree. That's love.

For my last few workshops I've used "real" couples to demonstrate to the class how to engage people and shoot at the same time. Joe and Tara agreed to be our muses so I did an engagement session for them. Taking the photos was effortless. From the first exposure, I could feel their spirit. A spirit of love, a spirit of joy, a spirit of unity, a spirit of peace. Lucky for me...I get to document their wedding very soon and its going to be a blast! Please join me in congratulating the couple and praying blessings over their union.
