Photographers stand together before the walk: 11.9.2013 Washington, D.C.

To say that I was excited and nervous about organizing photographers to walk together and take photos in DC is an understatement. I woke up early on Saturday morning (11.9.13) thinking about what I was going to say when everyone showed up. How many people would come? How much money would we raise for Five Talents? How would I photograph the area?

I did what I know always works, I prayed. It was then that I felt the words enter my heart that described exactly what I wanted us to accomplish and what would hopefully motivate everyone to bond. So there I stood on a bench (shaking a little from the cold 35 degrees) before the photographers and read my charge:

-->
On this Day We Walk

On this day we walk
Because our ancestors had to walk to create change
We walk knowing we are ‘that’ change

On this day we walk
Because we want to help our fellow man
We walk to achieve this plan

On this day we walk
Because we want to build a stronger community
We walk, for uplifting one another is our duty

On this day we walk
Instead of succumbing to anonymity
We walk into our future possibilities

On this day we walk
Because we want to be a group of purpose
We walk to redefine our commitment to service

On this day we walk
Because we want to capture our history
We walk and use our cameras as the oratory

-Ross Oscar Knight

We raised close to $400 for Five Talents and gained new friends. We had photographers and some members of the community to join us along the way. I was so happy I thought my heart would burst. Enjoy some of the photos below and if you are on Instagram or Facebook, then search for the Hashtag #ROKDCPHOTO to see more images.

I want to thank Give & Receive for facilitating our connection to Five Talents. Give & Receive 'connects resources to needs.' Please visit both of our partners to learn how you can help us all redefine philanthropy.

Most of all, I want to thank the brave souls that came out and walked for hours with me to Build Community Through Photography. I love you all!

KNIGHT Partners with Five Talents to Build Community in the Capitol

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

Full Press Release: Here

International Photographer Leads 100+ Photographers to Build Community in Nation’s Capitol

Industry: Non Profit, Arts and Culture

Washington, DC/Atlanta, November 7, 2013, 8:00 am – Cultural awareness and cause-based photographer, Ross Oscar Knight today announced a partnership with Five Talents to support entrepreneurs in developing countries.  As part of a Photo Walk, organized by Knight, over 100 photographers from across the U.S. will travel to Washington, D.C. The photographers will combine their skills and passion to photograph the 2-mile stretch of the National Mall. The event will take place November 9, 2013 (9:30 AM to 2 PM) with all proceeds going to support the non-profit organization, Five Talents.

Five Talents’ mission is to fight poverty, create jobs and transform lives by empowering the poor in developing countries through innovative savings and microcredit programs, business training and spiritual development. Since 1999, nearly 500,000 men and women have been positively impacted. Now supporting programs in 11 countries, almost $5 million has been invested with a repayment average of 95%.

Knight is a 2002 Morehouse College graduate and former utility industry Electrical Engineer and Business Consultant. He took a leap of faith in 2007 and left his stable career to pursue photography full-time. Since then, he has traveled to 5 continents and used his documentary images to raise awareness for Autism, Pancreatic Cancer, Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer Research. His current fine art exhibit, Beauty in the Face of Destruction, is touring the country to support communities in Haiti affected by the 2010 earthquake.

“The initiative of the KNIGHT Photo Walk is to Build Community Through Photography,” says Knight. “By bringing a positive group of photographers together, I want to foster lasting relationships between photo enthusiasts and encourage them to redefine philanthropy through acts of service to one another and our global community.”

Knight adds, “This has been on my heart to do since 2008. That is when I hosted my first intimate workshop, gathering ten photographers at a coffee shop. I just didn’t have the influence at the time to reach a larger audience. Six years later I am certain it is time for me to help marry the visual stimulus of photographers’ images and the desire for camaraderie, in order to impact the reach of service-based organizations.”

In 2014, Knight is planning to extend his community initiatives to other U.S cities, as well as, internationally to countries such as Rwanda. A community partner will be selected for each photo walk that aligns with the initiative’s mission to build community.

“It is an honor to combine forces with Five Talents on the inaugural Photo Walk in Washington, D.C.”
