The First Proposal of the Year...

Friday, February 29, 2008

Hey everyone, stay tuned for the first proposal of the year! I'm in New York for the weekend and this proposal is going to be amazing. Seeming as though my own wedding is next weekend, I'm ready to get back home and finish all the last minute details. I'll post soon.

Timothy + Yvanka = Sunshine

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

It's the truth. Before the shoot we contemplated rescheduling because of the clouds and the drizzle. My favorite time to shoot is when it's cloudy out but I have learned not to mess with women and their hair when the humidity rises or rain clouds are visible.

We decided to give the shoot a "go" despite the weather. As soon as Tim and Yvanka stepped out of their vehicle and started smiling the clouds parted, the sky turned blue, and the sun started shining as if rain was not an option!

They must have a way with things just falling right into place. At least that's what I noticed during the shoot and while listening to the story of their first encounter. Tim and Yvanka met at the airport. I didn't quite figure out who made the first move but it was obvious from the magnetic energy between the two that standing in a line at the airport could have only lasted but for so long.

I know the Academy Awards came on Sunday but I would give an Oscar to these two any day. I gave them several scenarios to work with and the rest was history. No second takes and all improv. I loved it!! My first engagement shoot of the year and now 2008 is off to a great start!

Check out a few of the pictures below.

Dr. Cornel West - Makes Me Reminisce

Wednesday, February 20, 2008

On Monday I had the pleasure to photograph Dr. Cornel West at The Home Depot Headquarters and Morehouse College (my alma mater) in Atlanta. The events were sponsored by The Home Depot and Hidden Beach Records. I was captivated by Dr. West's speech which seemed to resonate through my camera right into my brain! He is awesome. I can't believe how creatively he can answer questions when thrown at him at random. What I truly respect about Dr. West is his spirit of service. Every time someone tried to give him anything - like water to drink - he was pouring water for others first.

I truly had to reminisce for a while when I first arrived at Morehouse. 11 years ago I sat in the narrow seats of The Martin Luther King Chapel with 3000 other young men and my life was forever changed. I was inspired week after week by amazing speakers from around the globe and like-minded men who were committed to changing the world. And here I am today, making my mark on the world through images that tell stories as seen through my eyes.

Enjoy the photos below...

Our First Wedding Shower!

Thursday, February 14, 2008

Last night my L.E.A.D Class threw us a wedding shower here in Atlanta. Thanks to Matt (clap 4 times...inside joke)! It was great to see the familiar faces that I spent so much time with last year. The guest list to our wedding has grown so much, we are having smaller parties to celebrate our union with friends and associates. Here's a few shots from the shower.

experience KNIGHT - 1 down - 2 to go!

(Click the center of the picture to play show)

10 months ago I had a vision. The vision was to offer my business knowledge and photography expertise to beginning photographers looking to enhance their skills. The odds were against me. I have never attended formal Photography School nor do I have an MBA in Business or Marketing. I haven't put together a power point presentation in over 3 years!

What I had on my side was my passion for photography and my commitment to helping people. I love people! I get excited just thinking about discussing new ideas, debating old ideas, and developing plans for the future.

So with all of this in mind, I set out to fulfill the vision (see entry: write the vision) and further support the purpose of my company: Building Community Through Photography.

Over 6 months, I compiled all of the thoughts, ideas, experiences, advice, wisdom, successes, failures, techniques, business, marketing, lighting, composition, tips and everything in between - all into what I called the KNIGHT experience.

On February 8, 2008 - the first brave souls stepped into my premiere workshop! They came from Illinois, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Georgia! I could not have asked for a better crowd. This class will always be special to me because they were my first. I feel blessed to have met them all.

As I quickly learned, we're gonna have to extend the workshop into a full two-day affair.

Enjoy the slide show above! Also, I 'll post some images taken by the workshop participants soon.

April and July Workshops - get ready!!!

experience KNIGHT! The Workshop Countdown

1 Day until experience KNIGHT!

I am so entirely excited about our workshops coming up this year! The February class has been selected and I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of our out-of-town visitors. We have two days full of back breaking, mind boggling, temperature rising....ok just kidding. I had a few of you going for a minute there. But seriously, I've worked non-stop for the last few months to transfer all of the information stored in this brain of mine to pen and paper. I feel like I could write about 7 books and still have info left to send you people home with. My workshop coordinator had to pull the reigns and hold me back from going a tad bit insane and maybe driving you there also. So make sure to thank her by email or when you see her at the workshop. She has really been an angel.

I'll tell you this much, I just wish I was able to attend a workshop when I was first starting out in photography to hear some of this stuff. Its like taking your photography skills and business into warp drive (is that a word - Star Trek maybe??). We're talking shooting, marketing, business, editing, life, commitment, passion and a special little equation I like to call "The KNIGHT Formula." You'll have to come to one of the workshops to hear more about that. Its been copy written since its so hot!

By the end of our workshop I am looking to send some passionate and inspired individuals back into the field of photography with a reconditioned vision and mission.

Our next two workshops after February are in April and July. May sound crazy that I would put these classes right in the middle of a busy wedding season but these folks will get the added benefit of seeing my updated images from this year. And what a year its gonna be!!!

If you are still interested in attending one of our workshops, the application can be downloaded from the original post below. Or just email us at: workshops@rossoscarknight.com

Attention April Applicants: Your acceptance letters should have arrived already!

Attention July Applicants: Your letters will be next!

There's only 15 spaces per class. If you were not accepted do not fret, we may possibly add another class before the end of the year or a space may become available due to conflicts with other applicants.

A tribute..from The Cross Poet

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

The transmission on my car went out today and looks like I am going to start looking for some new wheels. I sure did love that Honda and the gas mileage and the $0 car payment coming up.

Just as I hung my head low, inspiration came from one of my blog readers. I received an email today from a young lady who definitely turned this rainy day in Atlanta into a sunny one for me. She goes by the name "The Cross Poet." She recently wrote and emailed me an article that included several men she is honoring for Black History Month.

The article includes words about her father, her brother, her man, Lamman Rucker, Saul Williams, Djimon Hounsou, Idris Elba, Ross Oscar Knight, Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Roosevelt Bouie, and G. Garvin.

Here is a copy of the article: © 2008 The Cross Poet

And here is the link to the full article.

Cross Poet, I am truly humbled by your words and thoughts. You are a wonderful writer and a unique individual. Thank you for blessing me today.
